Victorian Bushfire Appeal & Carnival Fundraiser

On Tuesday 10/2/2009, the student population and wider college community, led by the members of the Student Representative Council, raised well in excess of $7,200 to the Salvation Army Victorian Bushfire Appeal in response to the recent devastating bushfires in Victoria.

"I heard tonight from one of the parents of some kids from church who are at VSC that today you guys raised $7000 for the bushfire appeal for the salvo's! I just wanted to say thanks to you and the school. I'm sure Meredith has been right in there, but haven't had a chance to talk to her yet.

Anyway, just wanted to you how proud I am of VSC. I've had lots of colleagues who've already been serving at various sites around the state, including quite a few who've pulled all-nighters. Matt and I are rostered on for chaplaincy/counselling/material assistance up at Healsville on Thursday from 5pm til midnight. While I am sure you don't need any reassurance, I can tell you that every dollar that VSC raised will help the cause and that it will go directly to those who need it! Thanks again for the support! "

"My grand daughter called me last night to give me some good news. She told us that you managed to raise over $7000 yesterday for the victims of the fires.

We live in the Murrindindi area. The fires have affected the whole community in different ways. The kind gestures of your students and staff at Vermont Secondary College are greatly appreciated."

April Update

“Generation Y” have often been seen as the“selfish” generation. However, the students at Vermont Secondary College have broken the mould and shown themselves to be a caring and generous community. In response to the tragic events of the Black Saturday bushfires, Vermont Secondary students raised a grand total of $11,625.15 for the bushfire appeal.

One of the highlights of the fund raising efforts was the Bushfire Carnival where the entire college had the opportunity to enjoy stalls and food, and raise money. The students gathered in the gym for student bands, face painting, hair spraying and temporary tattoos. The teachers baked cakes and cookies that were sold, as well as snow cones, fairy floss and pop corn. My Whippy came and donated his proceeds from the day, and a double decker bus from The Salvation Army parked in the grounds which had flat screen TVs and Nintendo.

Clean-up equipment was also collected from the families at Vermont. This included shovels, gloves, rakes, protective gear for those who have lost their homes in the bushfires.

The SRC would like to thank all those who have helped in this amazing effort, especially the carnival. Mr Wise for lending us the music equipment, Flossy’s Fairy Floss (Mr and Mrs Ackroyd’s business) who came for free and stayed all day to make fairy floss, snow cones and pop corn for hoardes of students. We would like to thank the teachers for baking the goods, The Salvation Army for painting faces and bringing the Nintendo bus for free, and the SRC would especially like to thank Mr Beauglehall for lending all of his PA equipment for the bands, and
staying around all day to do the sound and technical equipment.

The students at Vermont Secondary College should also be congratulated for their amazing generosity
and financial response to the Bushfires.
