rice2004 English Week

International Year Of Rice

At Vermont Secondary College we celebrate the teaching and learning of English during English Week (3/5/2004 to 7/5/2004) as students develop and consolidate skills in their on-going study of English.

Keeping with the tradition of the school, our celebration of students' achievements is focused on the theme determined each year by the United Nations. The theme for the year is the International Year of Rice, symbol of cultural identity and global unity.

This had lead our students to think about issues like poverty, agricultural production and human health.  The theme provided a framework, Rice Is Life, for students to participate in a process of reflection and creativity.

In keeping with this, a photography competition open to all students where they could have presented their interpretation/exploration of the theme, International Year of Rice.

On 5th May, Year 8 students had a visit from Boori (Monty) Pryor, an Aboriginal writer. He talked to us about how he dealt with being 'different' as a child and what he has done with his life. He was a very entertaining speaker and kept us all amused. He talked a lot about himself and what inspired him to become a writer. He spoke to us about his past and how he overcame the fear of being 'different'. Hearing Boori was a great motivational experience - written by Jessica M and Becky L (8.1)
