Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program 2019

Vision Statement

At Vermont Secondary College we provide our students with a learning environment that prepares them for the challenges of the 21st century.
The college is committed to the development of lifelong learning skills that motivate and enable all students to achieve their goals and make a positive contribution to the global community. The challenge is that the 21st century is increasingly complex, global and networked. The educational imperative is to improve young people’s ability to thrive and think critically in an information rich world. 1:1 learning enables students to learn independently, collaborate with peers and communicate their understanding using varied and exciting media. Digital technologies are integral to students’ lifestyles, behaviours and character formation.

Vermont Secondary College BYOD Program

The iPad program has currently been running for five years and has opened up learning opportunities for our students providing them with easy access to ‘anytime, anywhere’ learning. This has also provided greater opportunities for students to develop independent enquiry based learning and allow staff to personalise learning.

As a college we feel that as students move into VCE, they require a device that can be used more efficiently to draft, edit and produce assessment tasks. A laptop is a portable version of a desktop computer, with the same features as a desktop PC and a tablet. The laptop also provides the advantage of greater productivity and hardware connectivity. The BYOD program in Year 10-12 will further enhance the iPad program already operating in the junior school.

Vermont Secondary College has entered into a partnership with JB Hi-Fi Educational Solutions. This offers the opportunity for students to purchase iPads & Laptops at educational pricing for use throughout their studies. Once a product has been selected, the student will then be able to add accessories to best suit the device. An insurance cover option has also been provided as an optional addition, which protects the student’s device from accidental damage. JB Education in partnership with Vermont Secondary College has also provided the option for various Finance Options to families. This includes a one-off upfront payment via Eftpos/BPAY/Credit Card or the option to enter into a rental agreement of 12 months interest free Credit Card Payment Plan.

Recommended Devices

In 2019 all students from Years 7 to 9 will continue to use iPads. Students in Year 10 can continue to use their iPads, but should be transitioning to Laptops for Year 11 & 12.

We recommend that students purchase an iPad (32Gb) or better, with Wi-Fi only. Students can use an iPad from their primary school, however it must be capable of running the latest IOS version.

For students purchasing a laptop we recommend choosing a device based on the subjects you’re currently taking. Individual preference between Mac and Windows will also be a deciding factor.

Laptop Recommendations:

- Apple MacBook Air running latest MacOS version.
- Windows laptop with solid state drive (SSD) running Microsoft Windows 10.
